PC VR streaming arrives on standalone Vive headsets, no wires necessary.
Wireless PC VR streaming is nothing new. Using a combination of different third-party streaming software such as ALVR, Riftcat, and Virtual Desktop, users have been streaming PC VR content to their Oculus Quest headsets for months. With the recent launch of the Oculus Link, providers have begun introducing their own official solutions to VR streaming.
Today, HTC Vive announced the beta launch of its own PC VR streaming solution, VIVEPORT Streaming. Available free to Viveport Infinity subscribers, VIVEPORT Streaming allows users to stream the entirety of the service’s massive catalog of VR games and experiences wirelessly to either their VIve Focus Plus or Vive Wave standalone headsets.
“In the past, VR customers have had to choose between the high-quality visuals and the large content library of PC VR systems, or the wireless freedom and ease of use of a standalone VR device,” said Alvin Wang Graylin, China President, HTC, in an official release. “With Viveport Streaming we’re linking a large content library with the convenience of standalone headsets, all without a tether to the PC.”
The process is fairly simple: users simply need to make sure both their compatible Vive headset and VR-ready PC are connected to the same 5GHz Wi-Fi network. Once connected, Viveport will automatically detect both devices and link them to one another; all it takes is a “single click.”
Currently available at $12.99 per month ($8.99 if you opt for the annual plan), Viveport Infinity offers subscribers access to over 800 premium titles, including–but not limited to–Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted, SUPERHOT VR, Doctor Who; The Edge of Time, Arizona Sunshine, Battlewake, Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs, Tilt Brush, Apex Construct, and many others.
The service is compatible with a wide range of VR hardware, including the HTC Vive, HTC Vive Pro, Vive Focus/Focus Plus, Oculus Rift/Rift S, Skyworth S8000, and the Shadow VR streaming service, with support for additional 6dof devices on the way in the near future.
