Microsoft Flight Sim 2024 VR Support Is Up In The Air

The latest edition of the popular flight simulator will feature new professions to master and aircraft to pilot, but what about VR?

This past weekend, Microsoft revealed that a standalone sequel to the 2020 edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator is in the works for PC and Xbox consoles, promising “the latest technologies in simulation, cloud, machine learning, graphics, and gaming.”

During the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase, we caught a glimpse at a number of exciting activities and professions demonstrated in a brand-new trailer.

This includes aerial firefighting, search and rescue, helicopter cargo transport, air ambulance, agricultural aviation, mountain rescue, skydive aviation, aerial construction, industrial cargo transport, remote cargo ops, VIP charter service, air racing, glider pilot, scientific research, experimental flight, low altitude training, executive transport service, airship tour, and hot air balloon trips.

Whew, that’s a lot of flying…

Unfortunately, there was no mention of VR during any portion of the showcase. It’s unknown at this time whether or not Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will feature support for PC VR headsets as was the case with the previous version. That said, we’d be surprised if Microsoft didn’t confirm official VR support at some point ahead of the release considering the positive reception it received with the last game.

What we do know is that developer Asobo Studio will continue to provide updates for the 2020 edition of the game and that current aircraft, airports, and “virtually all” Marketplace add-ons purchased will be compatible with the new edition. This includes the “Dune Expansion,” a free update coming this November that will allow you to fly an authentic House Atreides Ornithopter over the desert planet of Arrakis.
