O2 Telefonica, one of the UK’s largest mobile networks has launched a series of brand new VR experiences for subscribers.
For the first time, O2 customers and fans can go head to head against the England Rugby team or explore an O2 Academy venue as a star or fan. In addition to the two POV 360° videos, a third experience showcases some of the biggest moments at the O2 music and entertainment venue.
Compatible with multiple VR platforms including Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, fans will be transported into worlds of unforgettable live experiences.
O2 Academy Venues VR
Featuring a cast of over 100 and filmed by a crew of almost 30, the experience offers two experiences in one. Using a unique, interactive and switchable storytelling mechanic, you can swap between being a music fan or a member of the band – experiencing first-hand how the excitement builds both in front of and behind the stage.
The experience is the first time an O2 Academy venue has given any kind 360° behind the scenes access. The video takes you through a journey from the band’s point-of-view leaving the tour bus to preparation backstage in the dressing room, eventually leading up to the band walking on stage, transporting you directly inside the live music arena. The experience was captured in front of a live audience using The Nokia Ozo camera and Motion Impossible’s Mantis.
England Rugby VR
Shot on the Nokia Ozo as Stereoscopic 360° video combined with interactive CGI gameplay, O2 is giving gamers and rugby fans alike the chance to compete against the best the nation offers in rugby talent.
The interactive experience uses Xsens motion capture data taken on shoot day to provide accurate in-game player movement, taking cues from England Rugby players’ weight, mass and average speeds to ensure their character’s movements are as realistic as possible. Dylan Hartley, George Ford, Maro Itoje, Ben Youngs, Henry Slade as well as Mako and Billy Vunipola were all tracked and featured in the experience. VR players are then challenged to track the player’s movements (and those of the ball) and take part in virtual drills developed in partnership with England Rugby. The interactive, points based drills, range from scrummaging to tackling to kicking with the ultimate aim of being selected to wear the rose.
All VR experiences were produced by Interactive and Post studio; Happy Finish.
The experiences have been previewed during the 6 Nations Rugby Tournament and are now available to try at The O2 or in O2 stores across the UK (find your nearest store here).
The experiences will be available to download later this year in app stores.
