YouTube VR Available On Oculus Quest At Launch

VR’s best video app will be available on the standalone headset May 21st.

Oculus has confirmed Google’s popular YouTube VR app will be available on the Oculus Quest standalone VR headset when it launches this Tuesday, May 21st.

YouTube VR is hands-down your best option for watching 2D, 3D, 360-degree and VR180 videos in VR thanks to a wide variety of options for customizing your viewing experience. The baked-in Oculus Bowser does an impressive job at streaming video from YouTube and even provides a surprising amount of format options, including 360-degree, 3D, and VR180. Still, it’s hard to beat the convenience and slick appearance of YouTube’s tight user interface.

“YouTube is a platform traditionally centered around 2D, but there’s also a lot of energy and interest in emerging formats such as 360° and VR180 content,” said YouTube VR Product Lead Kurt Wilms in the release. “We know that both creators and viewers on YouTube are excited about exploring non-traditional mediums of storytelling.”

“From becoming a part of the Brave Wilderness crew on their rainforest adventure to taking a tour of actress Madelaine Petsch’s trailer in Los Angeles, we’ve seen creators embrace VR to create new immersive videos that make their community feel closer and more present.”

We’ve been teaming up with Google for the past few years on the YouTube Creator Lab project, working with some of the biggest names in YouTube to help grow the 360-degree and VR180 formats. In the process, we’ve seen the creation of some truly incredible immersive content that touches upon a wide range of topics all across the globe.

Interested in getting in on the VR180 action ahead of the headset’s release? Well, it just so happens we’re launching a brand new tutorial series that will break down everything you need to know about shooting professional VR180 video. Episode one is live on YouTube now! With the Oculus Quest set to bring VR to the masses, now would be the time to get in on the immersive video market.
