Are giant mechs the future of VR esports?
Ultimechs by Resolution Games is a fast-paced futuristic VR sports game that will have you buckling yourself into the pilot seat of a giant state-of-the-art mech and competing in front of a sold-out arena packed with rabid sports fans. That said, this isn’t some mindless beat-em-up; it’s a competitive ballgame during which you and a teammate work together in order to outwit your opponents as you play both offense and defense.
The game has you teleporting from point to point in pursuit of a massive superball ricocheting throughout the virtual arena. Similar to games like Rocket League, your primary objective is to knock the ball into the opposing team’s net using your rocket-powered fists. At the same time, you need to keep your eyes on your opponents and prevent them from doing the same exact thing.
In an official press release Tommy Palm, founder, and CEO of Resolution Games said, “Imagine guiding a missile and changing direction on the fly as you try to strike a target in mid-air at just the right angle. That’s the Ultimechs experience. It’s about guiding rocket-powered fists to find that Superball sweet spot, knocking it out of your opponents reach and into the goal.”
Palm sees Ultimechs as a way to connect people around the world using VR technology, all while embracing the spirit of competitive sports. “Ultimechs is all about those moments that can only happen on a team, like setting up shots for your partner to rack up the points, or guarding the net while your teammate calculates their best offensive move. We’re looking forward to seeing some fierce competition out there!”
Though Palm is most excited about the 2v2 gameplay, Ultimechs does offer a 1v1 game mode for all those lone wolves who refuse to believe that there’s no “I” in “team”.
Ultimechs is scheduled to launch on all major headsets sometime later this year. SteamVR is the only confirmed platform at the time of this writing. Players interested in joining the Ultimechs league can add the game to their wishlist on Steam starting today.
