Last month at Oculus Connect 2, we learned that Hulu would be launching a virtual reality app for the Samsung Gear VR with availability “this Fall”. It now looks like the Hulu app will be available as soon as next month in line with the launch of the $99 Gear VR.
This is great news for those interested in picking up the Samsung Gear VR in time for the holidays, the new $99 Gear VR will be compatible with the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, S6 and S6 edge.
Hulu joins a slew of other major digital providers, including Netflix, Vimeo, TiVo, and YouTube, that will be available as apps on the Gear VR at launch.
Subscribers to the service will be able to log directly into the Hulu app and watch Hulu’s entire library of content in 2D, similar to the viewing experience reported on with Netflix. Hulu is elevating the experience even further by also allowing viewers to watch content in a VR living room setting, a theater setting, or even show specific settings like the blue couch in Jerry’s iconic apartment to watch your favorite episode of Seinfeld.
Not only will Hulu launch with 2D content viewing experiences, the company is also dipping their toes in VR content production with the planned release of a VR short film called “The Big One,” created by YouTube creator Freddie Wong made alongside his upcoming Hulu original series.
Hulu also is considering commissioning an original series that is purely virtual reality without a 2D element. We wouldn’t be surprised if Netlfix was also working on original VR content for the fall season as well.
