Felix & Paul Studios, a creator and producer of cinematic live-action virtual reality experiences, announced the launch of a separate division focused solely on sound design and sound mixing for virtual reality experiences. The newly formed division, dubbed Headspace Studio, will deliver sound for live action VR experiences produced by Felix & Paul Studios as well as other VR creators.
On stage at TechCrunch’s Disrupt SF yesterday, Paul Raphael, Co-founder of Felix & Paul Studios announced the launch of the separate division focused on 3D, 360-degree sound mixing. Claude Zellweger, Associate VP of Industrial Design at HTC, Sony’s Head of R&D Dr. Richard Marks, and TechCrunch moderator Drew Olanoff joined Raphael on stage.
Headspace Studio is the first sound studio of it’s kind focused entirely on the creation and production of immersive VR content. The newly formed studio is responsible for creating the sound for Felix & Paul Studios projects Jurassic World: Apatosaurus, Cirque du Soleil Inside the Box of Kurios, New Wave from VRSE and a CGI project for The Mill on the Oculus and Samsung GearVR platforms.
Director of Sound Technology at Felix & Paul Studios Jean-Pascal Beaudoin has been named to lead Headspace Studio, which is based in Montreal, Canada.
“Creating high quality virtual reality experiences is a revolutionary, extremely complex process and sound design and mixing are essential components in delivering a fully-immersive experience for viewers,” said Raphael on the Virtual Reality panel at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in San Francisco. “Jean-Pascal and the team at Headspace Studio are experts in 3D sound design and mixing and will add tremendous value to a range of creators in the next new medium of virtual reality.”
The latest move from Felix & Paul Studios opens up additional collaboration opportunities with entertainment companies looking to make live-action experiences, as well as VR producers seeking additional VR sound support. Earlier this year Jaunt, who just raised new Series C funding of $65 million last week, created a content studio in Los Angeles to grow their VR production services aside from their existing 360-degree capture hardware business.
