The VRScout Art Show
VRScout started as a group of friends in Los Angeles exploring the creative implications of virtual reality. From the very beginning, our interest was less about the technology itself and more about what it would become in the hands of highly creative humans.
Over the past year, we have been on the lookout for artists, developers, creators and technologists who shared our vision. Last week, we brought them together for a night of art like none other with LA’s first virtual reality art show.
The VRT Gallery
When guests arrived at VICE, they walked into our VR art gallery, a curated collection of some of our favorite virtual art. The gallery featured five outdoor HTC Vive stations with art-centered experiences by some of the top creators in virtual reality. The HTC Vive, which launches this week, provides room-scale presence with precise motion and gesture tracking, allowing guests at the show to move around within these pieces of art and touch them with their hands.
HTC Vive gallery content included:
- Irrational Exuberance, Buffalo Vision
- The Rose and I, Penrose Studios
- Tilt Brush, Google
- Lucid Trips, VR Nerds
- THREEVR, by Float
- La Péri, by Innerspace VR
- Orange Sunshine: Origins, Master of Shapes
The rest of the gallery revolved around our Google Cardboard craft table. After guests designed their own Cardboard headsets, they sat down with directors and creators from VICE, Vrse and Google to experience first-hand their artistic expressions in mobile VR.
Additional VRT gallery content included:
- A History of Cuban Dance, Lucy Walker
- Evolution of Verse, Vrse
- Dreams of Dali, Goodby Silverstein & Partners
- A Fall With the Rebel Angeles, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium
- Zen Parade, Shapespace VR
- VR Heads, Zenka
Live Tilt Brush Performances
On center stage, we assembled a lineup of LA artists to paint live in virtual reality using Tilt Brush by Google. The artists included Tim Biskup, James Haunt, ArtMobb, and Titmouse Animation‘s Chris Prynoski and Antonio Canobbio. Here is a flattened gallery of their creations.
Stay tuned this week as we share more content from the VRScout Art Show. You can find more info at artshow.vrscout.com. This was the first of many events, so be sure to subscribe to hear what’s next!
