Star Wars fans, rejoice. Disney and Google have teamed up in a big way to keep you in hysterics leading up to the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December. They just unveiled a series of experiences across most of the Google properties you probably already use, including a virtual reality experience for Google Cardboard.
The campaign is called Awaken the Force Within and it starts today. To participate, you just log in at Google.com/starwars (link no longer active) and make a choice. Dark side or light side? After that, your Google apps will reflect the path you’ve choosen. Special experiences have been developed for Google Calendar, Chrome, Gmail, Google Maps, Waze, YouTube and more.
On December 2, they’ll launch a serialized Google Cardboard virtual reality experience that ties into the storyline for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The VR experience will live in an official Star Wars app and will be available on both iOS and Android.
The experience is a collaboration between Google and Verizon, developed by ILMxLAB, a laboratory for immersive entertainment from Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound.
Four custom Star Wars Google Cardboard designs will be available exclusively in Verizon stores beginning December 2.
