The best-selling board game gets a VR adaptation this Holiday.
With over 22 million copies in 30 languages sold over the past couple decades, this iconic board game is getting a modern day makeover—in virtual reality. A new version of Settlers of Catan is being developed by game studio Experiment 7 in collaboration with the creators of the original creators of Catan.
Dubbed Catan VR, the VR game will be coming to both the Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR this Holiday 2017.
The Catan VR announcement doesn’t reveal much in regards to gameplay, only described as “true to the classic, but optimized for virtual reality.” What we can expect is the VR game featuring both single-player and online multiplayer modes, where “players can watch the island come to life in VR for the first time, with beautiful in-game environments and cross-play functionality.”
“The first time I saw Catan on the Magic Table, I was fascinated by what VR has to offer,” said Catan creator Klaus Teuber in a statement. “The game I made in our living room with my family 25 years ago in Virtual Reality? It’s incredible. I never imagined actually stepping into the world of Catan when we first started making cut-outs and dreaming about exploring new lands.”
VR game studio Experiment 7 also created Magic Table Chess and Dungeon Chess, two fantasy-based VR chess game for Oculus Rift.
