Step inside a life-like recreation of the time-traveling spacecraft later this month.
Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, an upcoming interactive VR experience from Oculus and BBC Studios, is set to launch September 29th on PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift/ Rift S, HTC Vive, and Vive Cosmos. The feature-length cinematic experience will include a handful of classic Doctor Who villains, including the nefarious Dalek and endlessly-creepy Weeping Angels. Players will also have the opportunity to pilot the TARDIS, a legendary time-traveling spacecraft and the Doctors preferred mode of interdimensional travel.
Earlier today, BBC gave us our first look at the infamous vehicle as it’s represented in-game. Developed by Maze Theory, the team visited the set of Doctor Who in Cardiff earlier this year where they took hundreds of photographs of the TARDIS in order to build a life-like recreation using a method referred to as photogrammetry. In the end, the team spent over 1200 painstaking hours designing this true-to-life imitation of the fabled interdimensional spaceship.
According to an official release by the BBC, this VR rendition of the TARDIS will feature controls identical to those featured throughout the long-running show; every detail has been included for the sake of maintaining authenticity, right down to the integral custard cream biscuit dispenser.
“The TARDIS is a very important and hugely iconic element of the show and Doctor Who: The Edge of Time offers the chance to experience it like never before,” stated Maze Theory’s Creative Director Marcus Moresby. “It’s been a huge undertaking to deliver the very best TARDIS experience and is much anticipated by fans of the show. We know they’re going to love it.”
Oculus and BBC Studios will have a demo of Doctor Who: The Edge of Time available during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con at the BBC America Booth (#4129). While there fans will have the chance to pilot the TARDIS themselves alongside the 13th Doctor (Jodie Whittaker).
While a brief sample of the interactive experience was shown at this years London Comic-Con at the Royal Victoria Dock in Excel, London, this SDCC appearance marks the first time US audiences will have a chance to go hands-on with the ambitious experience.
San Diego Comic-Con 2019 kicks-off Thursday, July 18th to Sunday, July 21st at the San Diego Convention Center. Those who are unable to attend will, unfortunately, have to wait for the public release September 29th on PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift/ Rift S, HTC Vive, and Vive Cosmos.
