Explore every step of seafood production in Daydream Impact’s latest VR documentary.
More than a third of the global harvested seafood is lost or wasted on its journey to your dinner table. In the U.S. it is closer to half, with most fish being wasted by consumers.
Ocean to Plate: A Journey into the Seafood Supply Chain, takes viewers on a 360° experience that lifts the curtain on modern seafood production, revealing the process and its resulting waste.
Brought to us by The World Wildlife Fund, Condition One, and Google as part of our Daydream Impact program, the powerful documentary was released in honor of World Ocean’s Day in the hopes of shining a light on the impact harvesting seafood can have.
Over the last 50 years, demand for seafood has increased five-fold,” said Daydream Impact, “and as a result, nearly 90 percent of the world’s fisheries are harvested up to or beyond their limit.”
The documentary highlights not only how environmentally damaging harvesting fish can be, but the environmental impact of every aspect of the industry. This is due in large part to the amount of energy it takes to refrigerate fish at every step of the production process.
Seafood isn’t the only type of food waste the World Wildlife Fund is trying to bring attention to. The U.S. leads the world in food waste, therefore bringing awareness to the waste of water, meats, fruits, vegetables, and other valuable resources the country carelessly disposes of could potentially slow the effects of climate change.
The immersive educational experience, available on YouTube or by a VR viewer with Google Cardboard, taps into VR’s power as a tool of empathy. The 360 perspective shows seafood production as if you are a fly on the wall, or a fish awaiting prep in a grocery store.
For those who want to dive deeper into the steps of the industry, Daydream Impact also created a Google Earth experience that allows you to actually see the physical journey seafood takes.
While the documentary focuses on creating awareness about the limitations of the ocean, Daydream Impact has also released other virtual experiences celebrating the beauty of our vast ocean’s.
Google Earth has also added a new experience for World Ocean’s Day, “Waterways from Space,” which highlights beautiful satellite images of the ocean captured by NASA.
