NBA Athletes Try Their Hand at Tilt Brush for HTC Vive

Mountain Dew partnered up with the NBA to put Tilt Brush in the hands of a few NBA All-Star athletes.

During NBA All-Star Weekend in Toronto, fans not only got a chance to demo Google’s Tilt Brush on the HTC Vive, but also watch some of their favorite NBA All-Stars live-paint basketball themed 3D-artwork in virtual reality.

The “Court Vision: An Interactive Virtual Reality Art Experience” as Mountain Dew called it, was hosted at the Artscape Sandbox in downtown Toronto this past weekend and included live-painting sessions from NBA athletes Russell Westbrook, CJ McCullom and Jeremy Lamb. Emerging artists ArtMob, MADSTEEZ, Jarus, Bacon and Kwest also showed off their skills with the HTC Vive in front of a packed house.

Five HTC Vive Pre’s were setup on-site, letting fans demo Tilt Brush some two months before the Vive actually goes on sale. And of course there was plenty of Mountain Dew to go around to really get the creative juices flowing.

Even Dikembe Mutombo wanted in on the action and stopped by to try his hand at Tilt Brush (video below).

Tilt Brush by Google is an app for the Vive that lets you paint in 3D space, letting you paint life-size brush strokes, stars, light and even fire all within VR. Tilt Brush’s intuitive interface lets you toggle between colors and creation tools, so your creative freedom is nearly boundless, and because you’re in a 3D space, you can walk into and around your creations, making art experiential. It’s like Microsoft Paint from the future and definitely one of our favorites.

“The Mountain Dew brand is all about finding and delivering awesome, one-of-a-kind experiences to DEW Nation,” said Greg Lyons, senior vice president of marketing, Mountain Dew. “The NBA partnership has been a natural fit for us, and we’re pumped to help deliver an immersive All-Star experience to hoops fans – one that symbolizes how the game starts on the court, but lives everywhere.”

Considering Russell Westbrook took home NBA All-Star Game MVP honors on Sunday for the second straight year, lets just say Tilt Brush helped him dominate in the paint.
