“Bear! Bear! Run you stupid piece of s*#^!” – Geralt of Rivia
There’s never been a better time to be a Witcher fan. Originally a series of novels and short stories, the dark fantasy series starring a mutated monster hunter has since been adapted into an award-winning video game trilogy and—most recently—an episodic Netflix show that’s managed to draw in both fans of the series as well as total newcomers.
But with season 2 of the series set to premiere in 2021 and the possibility of a fourth entry in the game franchise unlikely, how exactly are we to satisfy our appetite for more monster-killing adventures?
Enter Patryk Loan, a Witcher megafan currently in the process of rebuilding the original Witcher game in VR. Rather than developing a mod for the original 2007 release, however, Loan is constructing the entire experience from the ground up in Unreal Engine, resulting in higher quality visuals as well as a new range of possibilities.
At the moment, players can only explore the hallowed grounds of Kaer Morhen, an inescapable mountain stronghold that once served as a training ground for up-and-coming witchers. Still, being able to walk alongside the massive walls surrounding the towering stone structure is sure to put a smile on the face, especially for hardcore fans of the series.
Loan plans on releasing regular updates for the experience, introducing new maps and even a playable narrative along the way; perhaps a story of his own making.
You can download Loan’s Witcher VR experience free via NexusMods. The experience should be compatible with all major VR headsets.
