VR Military FPS ‘Contractors VR’ Brings Fast-Paced PvP To Oculus Quest

Caveman Game Studio’s team-based shooter arrives on Quest with new single player and co-op missions.

Earlier this week, Caveman Game Studio, developer behind Contractors VR, launched the official standalone port of its popular team-based VR shooter on the Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2, offering players yet another AAA military shooter centered around realistic modern warfare.

Originally released on PC VR headsets back in 2018, Contractors VR instantly caught our attention with its finely-tuned weapon mechanics, well-crafted environments, and what could easily be considered the best weapon scopes featured in a VR shooter. This standalone port ups-the-ante even further with additional game modes and various quality-of-life improvements aimed at providing a “fast-paced action-packed experience.”

In addition to existing PvP game modes such as Team Deatchmatch, Gun Game, and Extraction, the new Quest/Quest 2 port features new PvE gameplay in the form of both offline single-player and online co-op missions. Players have access to an arsenal of 30 different weapons, customizable loadouts, and a unique target practice hub area featuring both human and zombie bots. There’s even support for cross-play, allowing you to team up with friends on Oculus Rift/Rift S.

“Running Contractors VR on a mobile chipset is a tall order. We want the Quest port to retain the same flavor as the PC version,” said developer Caveman Game Studio in an official release. “To get the best performance out of Quest, we improved code efficiency and rewrote parts that might cause CPU overhead. Another major obstacle is GPU overhead.”

“The original Quest allows a maximum of 200,000 triangles and 200 draw calls. It is impossible to just copy-paste PC assets to the Quest version, so we made tools to conveniently switch between PC and mobile assets. We are a relatively small team at the moment, so handy tools saved us plenty of time and energy so we could focus on the thing that is most important: gameplay.”

According to the developer, additional single-player and co-op missions and maps are on the way. The team is also working to bring players mods to the standalone release, which would allow you to design your own game modes, maps, weapons, and loudouts.

“VR lets people play games from a fresh new angle,” added the team. “Some games are meant to be played in VR, and there are unforgettable moments that you could only experience in VR. With the increasing performance of all-in-one VR devices and cheaper manufacturing cost, I have no doubt VR gaming will reach a much broader audience in the next few years.”

Contractors VR is available now on Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 for $19.99.
