The Simpsons Couch Gag Goes VR For 600th Episode

The Simpsons teamed up with Google to create an experience sure to make you go, DOH!

The Simpsons have done television, film, video games, almost every form of entertainment you can think of. However they’ve yet to make their debut on the hottest new entertainment platform out right now: virtual reality. Well you can officially wipe those tears away because thanks to the guys over at Google, the wait is now over. The long-running animated series will be releasing a virtual reality 360 experience alongside the premiere of their 600th episode, Treehouse of Horror XXVII. While the couch gag, entitled Planet of the Couches, will appear as a run-of-the-mill 45 second segment on television, a more extensive 360 video experience will be available for Google Cardboard on both iOS and Android as well.

The 3 minute adventure will take viewers through a city of virtual couches, as well as experience six different views of the Simpson family members being held in a mysterious prison and deliver a shocking climax to top it all off. The entire 360 video was based off the 45 second VR-themed couch gag, which was originally created with no intention of being paired with a VR experience.

Google released 25,000 limited-edition “Treehouse of Horror XXVII” Google Cardboard viewers featuring who else but Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie as part of the celebration. I say released because those puppies are long gone my friend.

“It’s a thrill to be associated with Google and not only because they have perfected the quality of their cafeteria food, especially those little sausages,” stated Simpsons Executive Producer James L. Brooks.

Homer Simpson himself even chimed in during the official press release: “At first we had concerns about working with Google because we didn’t know who they were but then we googled the company and were very impressed.”

Episode 600, Treehouse of Horror XXVII, airs Sunday, October 16th at 5pm Pacific; 8pm Eastern on FOX.
