DreamWorks Bringing Kung Fu Panda and Shrek to VR

These iconic DreamWorks characters will be coming to a VR headset near you.

Thanks to a partnership announced Tuesday, DreamWorks Animation is teaming up with Digital Domain to produce virtual reality content and experiences for the family entertainment company’s most iconic and legendary characters.

The partnership will begin with the worlds of Shrek and Kung Fu Panda in VR, with other franchises planned in the coming months.

“For over two decades, DreamWorks Animation has been entertaining audiences with some of the most original stories and beloved characters in entertainment,” said Rich Flier, Managing Director, Digital Domain Holdings Limited. “We are honored to be a part of bringing that great legacy to virtual reality audiences worldwide.”

There’s no word yet on which characters will be next or how these VR experiences will play a role in DreamWorks Animation’s current VR application. Back in 2015, Dream Lab, which is DreamWorks Animation’s storytelling division focused on creating everything from rides, to augmented reality, and virtual reality experiences for the company, announced the launch of the DreamWorks VR platform for Gear VR.

DreamWorks VR Penguins

For the launch of the DreamWorks VR platform, three pieces of content were available that could be described more as theater trailers instead of actual full-blown VR experiences. The content available included a twenty year retrospective piece on the studio, another for their recent release of Home, and the last being an interactive experience for Penguins of Madagascar.

Digital Domain is a leading visual effects house that recently purchased Immersive Media Ventures, a leader in 360 degree video capture and streaming, and the partner in the IM360 joint venture, as well as the legendary Hong Kong production facility, PO. This move gave Digital Domain more production, technology and artistry capability in this exciting world of immersive entertainment.
