Björk Premieres Stonemilker Immersive Experience at MoMA PS1

Björk’s latest album Vulnicura, debuted earlier this year with tracks like “Family,” “Lionsong,” and “Black Lake.” If you’re looking for these tracks from Bjork’s new album on Spotify sorry folks you won’t find it there.

“The artist or their representatives have decided not to release this album on Spotify just yet. We’re working on it, and hope we can change their minds soon”

Yikes! Well, thank goodness Björk has no issues with YouTube and we’ve been able to not only hear the tracks but also see the videos. However, if you’re looking for the “Stonemilker” video, you won’t find it on YouTube just yet.

Instead you can experience the video in an amazing virtual reality installation at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) PS1. Directed by artist Andrew Thomas Huang, the immersive virtual reality video highlights the beach and a 360 degree panoramic view of where she wrote Stonemilker in Reykjavik, Iceland. Since the song features a 30 piece full orchestra, Björk decided do something that would make this more of an immersive experience.

If you walk into the VW Dome at PS1 you’ll find ten viewing stations with Oculus Rift headsets. For seven minutes you’ll hear an orchestra as if it were within inches of you. While you just chill on a beach in Iceland with Björk!

Björk does a pretty good job of being an expressive artist whether it’s her lyrics or her music videos. In 2011 she tried bringing that immersive experience with Biophiilia in an app, which wasn’t as immersive as we would’ve liked. If she’s able to provoke a deeper level presence through virtual reality then we can’t wait to see what else VR has in store with the music industry and what music artists can achieve.

The Stonemilker VR experience will be at MoMA PS1 until May 17, 2015 and at Rough Trade Records in New York and London. If you can’t make it to either locations then you’ll just have to settle for the 2D version that comes out next week.

UPDATE: Björk’s 360-degree virtual reality music video for the album single “Stonemilker” is now available to view on YouTube.
