The PlayStation VR2 Might Feature A Game-Changing Display

Sony’s next VR device is shaping up to be a game-changer.

According to a report by Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), the PlayStation 2 will feature a display density of 800 PPI (pixels per inch) per eye.

That’s twice the pixel density of the Meta Quest 2 and roughly four times that of the original PlayStation VR. If true, that would make Sony’s highly-anticipated device one of the sharpest VR headsets on the market.

“As we published today in the DSCC Weekly Review, the Sony PSVR2 will have over 800 PPI resolution per eye with two 2000 x 2040 panels, up from 5.7″ 1920 x 1080 with 386 PPI in the PSVR for both eyes. Big improvement. State of the art direct view OLED resolution,” said Young on Twitter (first spotted by AndroidCentral).

So what does this mean exactly? Well, PPI can be an excellent way to measure a headsets image quality; the higher the PPI, the sharper the image. To put things in perspective, the original PS VR features a combined PPI density of 386. That’s 1214 less than the combined PPI density of the PS VR2; quite an impressive leap in technology.

Sony shared additional information regarding the PlayStation VR2 earlier this month during CES 2022, revealing some impressive specs in the process. According to the company, the PS VR2 will feature a 4K HDR resolution (2000×2040 per eye) powered by an OLED display, smooth frame rates of 90/120Hz, and a 110-degree field-of-view.

Most interestingly of all, Sony has confirmed haptic feedback technology, foveated rendering powered by built-in eye-tracking, and improved motion controls.
