Adult Swim’s outrageous VR adventure goes head-to-head with Mr. Robot, Silicon Valley at this years upcoming Emmy Awards.
Originally released April of last year, Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality has pleased fans of both the adult-themed animated show and VR technology with a refreshing combination of comedic storytelling and unique VR gameplay.
Developed by Owlchemy Games, the original minds behind the hit VR title Job SImulator, the far-out immersive adventure places users in the shoes of Rick Sanchez’s reluctant side-kick, Morty Smith, as they participate in a series of seemingly-menial tasks, from basic laundry care, to complex ship repair.
Available on both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, the title gained mainstream attention thanks to its entertaining dialogue and unconventional puzzle-solving gameplay, going so far as to be nominated for the “Coney Island Dreamland Award for Best Virtual Reality Game” at the New York Game Awards 2018, as well as “VR Game of the Year” at the 2018 SXSW Gaming Awards.
This was just the tip of the iceberg in terms of accolades, however, as the raunchy VR title has now been nominated for a primetime Emmy award. Going up against popular other popular series such as Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, HBO’s Westworld, and USA’s Mr. Robot, just to name a few, Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality will be battling it out for the honor of Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media Within a Scripted Program.
Reclassified back in 2017, the award exists to highlight the very best interactive experiences based on linear television programming. Competing nominees include “Talk To The Reasons” inspired by Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, “Ecoin” based on USA’s Mr. Robot, Silicon Valley’s “Interactive World: Not Hotdog, VR & Twitter-Powered Pizza Drones,” and Westworld’s “Chaos Takes Control Interactive Experience” from HBO.
As major film studios and marketing firms continue to see the value in VR and AR technology as a promotional tool for original programming, you can be sure VR & AR experiences will begin to dominate these interactive categories.
The Rick And Morty episode “Pickle Rick” has also been nominated for Outstanding Animated Program.
The Emmy Awards celebrates its historic 70th anniversary September 17th at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
