The free version will feature all the tools included as part of the paid experience.
3D design tool Gravity Sketch is now available for free on all major VR platforms, including the Oculus Quest/Quest 2, Oculus Rift/Rift S, and SteamVR headsets.
Originally released on PC VR headsets back in 2017 for $24.99 ($99 for the Studio version), Gravity Sketch offers a creative toolset that allows you to express your ideas in both 2D and 3D. This includes everything from rough sketches and 2D designs to complex 3D models and spacious environments. The free version includes all the same features as the original paid release plus IGES and FBX* export options, previously only available to business customers (FBX available exclusively on PC VR).
That being said, those looking for additional support can choose the paid Business version for access to a variety of premium services, including onboarding, support, and training. Business customers can even collaborate with other users in real-time via the Co-Creation feature.
But why the transition to a free servce? According to Gravity Sketch, the decision stemmed from the companies desire to “diversify its user group” and “democratize digital 3D design.”
“Over the past few years the tool has been adopted by a healthy number of users who have helped influence the direction of the development as well as our business model,” said Gravity Sketch Co-founder and CEO Oluwaseyi Sosanya in an official statement. “To truly achieve our mission of accessible digital 3D creation, making the core product free is the best way forward.”
“Providing a free product allows us to welcome a more diverse user group. Early Adopters have helped support the development and R&D,” he added, “These users have been instrumental to what we have built to date; many of whom brought Gravity Sketch into their formal workflow which resulted in business contracts that helped accelerate our revenues to the point at which we can support and grow the team and platform.”
LandingPad, the companies web-based cloud workflow platform, also receiving its fair share of attention in the form of several new updates.
As provided by Gravity Sketch:
- Web inspector, which provides the ability to inspect and view sketches and 3D files in the browser removing the need to download the full file if you’re only after a peek.
- File tagging and commenting: share notes and comments on a file that you are working on outside of the VR experience.
- Sharing and managing files: keep your files organized and share project files with your collaborators.
