Has technology finally gone too far?
Back in 2016, Doug Keener released a free mod for 1994’s DOOM 2 that allows you to explore a virtual replica of Jerry’s iconic NYC apartment from the hit sitcom Seinfeld painstakingly brought to life using a combination of custom textures and sprites. Not only that, but you can also interact with the cast themselves, including Jerry, Elaine, Kramer, George, and Newman. And by interact I really mean attack; this is technically a DOOM game after all.
Each character features its own audio clips taken directly from the show as well as custom death animations for maximum trauma. Still not enough for you? Well, then you’re in luck, as apparently the mod can also be played in VR, bringing a whole new level of immersion to this somewhat unsettling experience.
In a video posted to Reddit this week, u/CypheCommander shows off a version of the popular mod running on the Oculus Quest using QuestZDoom. For those unfamiliar,QuestZDoom is an engine port that allows you to play classic DOOM games on the Oculus Quest with support for Touch controllers. That being said, the app itself does not come with any DOOM games; you need to provide your own copy of each game you wish to play.
In the video,u/CypheCommander can be seen navigating a virtual recreation of Jerry’s apartment while launching an all-out assault on Jerry, Elaine, George, Kramer, and Newman. I have to admit, hearing Jerry release a blood-curdling “Newman!” sent a genuine chill down my spine.
While the mod itself is fairly simple, it’s still an interesting example of VR modding on the Oculus Quest. Last year we covered the launch of an equally messed-up mod forQuestZDoom that allows you to battle demons alongside Isabelle from Nintendo’sAnimal Crossing: New Horizons. There’s also the rapidly growing PC VR modding community, which has exploded these past few years with custom content for games such as Blade and Sorcery and Half-Life: Alyx.
QuestZDoom is available for download via SideQuest. For those seeking a serious dose of nostalgia, I recommend loading up Chex Quest.
