VR App ‘Hauntify MR’ Turns Your Home Into A Haunted House

Collect mysterious artifacts scattered throughout your real-world environment while avoiding evil spirits.

Available now on the Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 via SideQuest, Hauntify MR is a unique VR experience that utilizes the Quest’s Passthrough+ technology to transform your real-world environment into a mixed reality hellscape stalked by a horrifying evil spirit.

In this one-of-kind game, you use your Touch controllers as a flashlight and explore your play space in search of mysterious artifacts. As you traverse your real-world environment, you’ll receive constant harassment from a variety of spirits and specters. Picking up these artifacts will anger the ghosts, however, so you’ll need to move quickly if you hope to escape with your life.

The game can be played in a single or multistory building and supports a maximum play space of 500×500 meters with a 100-meter max height. You begin by calibrating your walls before placing digital artifacts throughout your real-world environment.

You’re also in charge of establishing various enemy spawn points. Ghosts will generate periodically from these locations as well as randomly throughout the designated play space. In order to save your wall setup, quit the app immediately after calibrating your playspace. Continuing without exiting first will erase any progress you’ve made.

The game, while simple, makes excellent use of the Quest’s Passthrough technology to deliver a truly unsettling mixed reality game. The unique setup also plays a role in delivering a more realistic horror experience. Instead of teleporting randomly around the player, ghosts and spirits appear from behind walls and corridors. While this may sound like a relatively basic feature, AR occlusion makes all the difference in providing a realistic mixed reality experience.

Hauntify MR is available free to download on Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 via SideQuest. Be sure to take a look at the official instructions before getting started.
