The popular series heads to VR with multiple experiences based on the zombie-infested universe.
First a stellar comic book series, then a breakout hit television show, The Walking Dead has no shortage of beautifully-crafted content to devour (pun very much intended). Now the gritty zombie drama is looking to petrify fans on a whole new level by bringing the massively-popular franchise to virtual reality.
The VR series is being brought to life by Skybound Entertainment, a multiplatform entertainment company, in collaboration with Skydance Interactive, the gaming and VR division of David Ellison’s film and television production company, Skydance Media. The Paramount-based studio has an impressive resume, having previously been involved in the production of various big budget hits such as Life, Star Trek Beyond and World War Z. Now the heavy-hitting company is bringing their talents to the world of VR with not one, but multiple interactive experiences based within The Walking Dead universe.
The first game will introduce fans to a brand new story to fans including a never-before seen setting in the Walking Dead world filled with fresh new characters to love and probably cry over. Apparently the experience will also feature an innovative contextual interaction system built to bring a level of engagement never before seen in the franchise.
“Skydance’s ability to build worlds and tell compelling stories matches with our goal to bring The Walking Dead fans new narratives and ways to engage with the world Robert Kirkman created, while staying true to his original vision,” said Skybound Entertainment CEO David Alpert and Skybound Entertainment Managing Partner Jon Goldman in a joint statement. “Skydance Interactive is the ideal partner for the team Dan Murray has created for Skydance Interactive.”
“The Walking Dead is an iconic phenomenon and it is absolutely thrilling to work with Skybound to bring its incredibly diverse cast of characters, settings, and storylines together into a complete VR game package,” said Skydance Media Chief Executive Officer David Ellison and President and Chief Operating Officer Jesse Sisgold in a joint statement. “Our goal at Skydance Interactive is to honor the visceral world that Kirkman has created while giving The Walking Dead’s fans something to really sink their teeth into with robust games that take the franchise to a completely new level.”
Skydance Interactive is set to release its first original VR title, Archangel, this July. Skybound Entertainment recently launched its first original VR game, Giant Cop: Justice Above All, as part of a partnership between Other Ocean.
