E3 announcements are in full swing before the doors even open tomorrow in Los Angeles and we have another headset to be on the look out for. Starbreeze Studios, the developer behind the Payday series and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, is the latest company jumping into the VR headset game following their acquisition of French VR company InfinitEye.
InfinitEye has been working on its own head mounted display for some time under the name InfinitEye HMD and yesterday Starbreeze announced the StarVR, a new head-mounted virtual reality display that promises a wider field of view then any other VR hardware. To highlight the studio’s hardware, Starbreeze will demo its headset with Overkill Software’s upcoming shooter based on The Walking Dead at E3 this week.
StarVR is promising a 210 degree horizontal field of view and a 5120×1440 resolution thanks to dual 5.5 inch displays. 5K! StarVR will also feature complete orientation and position tracking thanks to a combination of gyroscopes, accelerometers, magnetometers and an optical tracking system. No release date has been announced yet.
With SteamVR, Oculus Rift, and Sony’s Morpheus expected to be popular headset devices at E3, it will be interesting to see what a traditionally software-oriented company can bring to the virtual reality game.
