With just two weeks until the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB studio has released the first official VR Star Wars experience ‘Jakku Spy’.
‘Jakku Spy’ is available via the Star Wars app and was developed in conjunction with Google and Verizon, with oversight from director JJ Abrams.
The Google Cardboard VR experience immerses the user into the role of a Resistance secret agent on Jakku (the desert world from Star Wars: The Force Awakens). This latest clip of ‘Jakku Spy’ is the first of nine clips expected to be released over the next two weeks. The second VR experience clip will hit the Star Wars app this Friday.
And because it wouldn’t be a virtual reality experience without a Google Cardboard viewer, four limited edition Star Wars themed cardboard viewers will available for free exclusively at Verizon stores. The Google Cardboard promotion was timed to celebrate the release of ‘Jakku Spy’ and includes a BB-8, Kylo Ren, First Order stormtrooper, and R2-D2 themed viewer.
The themed Stars Wars Google Cardboard viewers are beautifully designed and we immediately went to our local Verizon store to pick up one three for ourselves. It should be noted that you must be a Verizon customer to actually get your hands on one in-store.
Head on out and pick up a viewer because these won’t be around for that long. Be sure to download the Star Wars app (iOS & Android) if you haven’t already.
