Syfy’s Outrageous ‘Sharknado’ Franchise Heads To VR For The First Time

Fire an AK47 while trapped inside a shark-filled tornado in this immersive VR gore-fest.

In terms of sheer ridiculousness, very few franchises are able to hold a candle to the Sharknado series. Since the release of the first installment back in 2013, Syfy channel’s made-for-tv disaster comedy has spawned an incredible FIVE sequels, each filled with the same campy-nonsense that made the original such a hit.

On the heels of the franchises 6th and final release, The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time, Syfy Films is looking to send the series off with a bang. And what better way to celebrate such an incredibly bizarre film than with an equally bizarre VR experience.

Developed by Autumn VR, the same team behind Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul and Jesus VR: The Story of Christ, Sharknado VR: Eye of the Storm gives users the opportunity to step into the world of Sharknado and battle an onslaught of airborne sharks.

In Sharknado VR: Eye of the Storm, players find themselves in the middle of the gory action as they battle freak, fin-filled weather phenomena,” explains Dave Hansen, producer and director at Autumn VR. “It’s a great blend of humor and terror which should appeal to everyone! I mean, who hasn’t fantasized about blowing away a great white coming for them with a bazooka?”

Players will travel to several locations featured throughout the films, from NYC to LA, as they utilize AK47’s, chainsaws and a variety of other anti-shark weaponry over the course of several blood-soaked levels. Players will also find themselves dodging incoming barracudas, octopuses and poisonous jellyfish while simultaneously rescuing as many bystanders as possible. Hey, no one said being a Sharknado wrangler would be easy.

Fans of the franchise can expect plenty of the over-the-top gore they’ve come to expect from a Sharknado release as they hack n’ slash their way through waves upon waves of viscous sea monsters.

Sharknado VR: Eye of the Storm will be available later this year on a variety of platforms, including the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Playstation VR, iOS and Android. No word yet on an official price.
