The multi-platinum producer adds a unique atmospheric sound to Secret Location’s upcoming VR film, ‘The Great C.’
Developed by Entertainment One’s Emmy-award-winning studio, Secret Location, The Great C is a cinematic VR film telling the story of Clare, a young woman from a small village that participates in an annual lottery for an important pilgrimage. After her beloved fiance is selected for the journey, Clare ventures into the mysterious, outside world where she’ll struggle against the injustices of her new reality.
And what better way to encapsulate an immersive film with such raw emotion than with an equally raw sound? To ensure The Great C’s storyline was accompanied by a powerful, expressive soundtrack, Secret Location turned to Grammy-nominated, platinum award-winning composer, Junkie XL.
“Junkie XL’s reputation precedes him. We knew from the beginning that having him compose The Great C’s soundtrack would be a best-case scenario that takes our work to the next level,” said Ryan Andal, President and Co-Founder of Secret Location, in an official release. “Pairing a strong Philip K. Dick story with Junkie XL’s atmospheric soundtrack, and then wrapping it all up in an intense filmic experience has made The Great C an unmissable title we feel is indicative of a new wave of VR content that better shows the medium’s potential.”
A musical connoisseur, Junkie XL, real name Tom Holkenborg, has provided stellar music for numerous high-profile projects, such as Mad Max Fury Road, Deadpool, Tomb Raider, and Peter Jackson’s soon-to-be-released Mortal Engines. The Dutch composer, DJ, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and engineer also shares an affinity towards technology; rarely, if ever shy about experimenting with new sounds or instruments.
“I’m always looking for new technological advancements or mediums to experiment with in my composition work and The Great C was a unique project to explore VR, a really exciting new space with huge cinematic potential,” said Holkenborg. “I love being at the cutting edge and The Great C allowed me to really push the envelope of what a film viewing and listening experience can be.”
The Great C premiered earlier this year during the 2018 Venice Film Festival. A timed-exclusive release begins this month at participating location-based venues and arcades. Expect a full release on HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and PSVR headsets at some point Q4 2018.
