Resident Evil 7 ‘VR-X’ Prequel Announced By Capcom

The 4-person co-op experience launches exclusively in Japan later this month.

Beginning October 26th, Capcom will be offering Tokyo locals the chance to return to the swamps of Lousiana for another lethal encounter with murderous backwoods psychopath, Jack Baker.

Available for a limited time exclusively at the Plaza Capcom Ikebukuro VR-X booth in Tokyo, Japan, Biohazard 7: Walkthrough The Fear is a multiperson co-operative arcade experience that will have players working together to escape the confines of a horrifying murder basement located beneath a “large mansion.” Throughout the 40-minute experience, teams comprised of 2-4 players will have the ability to arm themselves with weapons as they battle against terrifying enemies, including some disgusting tar-creatures as well as the family patriarch himself.

Here’s some additional information provided by Capcom:

  • Store information “VR-X” in the Prasakapukon Ikebukuro store
  • Price 2,800 yen (tax included) / 1 person
  • Time required 40 minutes
  • Number of players 2-4 people
  • 4 people play simultaneously. If you apply for 3 or fewer people, you may be able to play with other group members who apply at the same time.
  • Online reservations for one person are only available at 15:00 and 21:00 hours.

Based on the “VR-X” description and the footage provided, it appears as though players can expect some sort of a location-based experience, one that will require them to physically move throughout their environment as opposed to utilizing artificial locomotion. Again, this information has yet to be confirmed, but the terminology used throughout the promotional content points heavily towards a more advanced interactive experience.

Biohazard 7: Walkthrough the Fear will be available for a limited time beginning October 26th exclusively at The Plaza Capcom Ikebukuro VR-X booth in Tokyo, Japan; just in time for Halloween. No word yet on whether or not we can expect a Western release.

Resident Evil (Biohazard) 7 was released January 24th, 2017 on Windows, Xbox One, and PS4, with the latter receiving VR support upon launch via the PS VR. One year later, Resident Evil 7 VR was released on PC VR headsets. The title took the Resident Evil franchise in a bold new direction, ditching the third-person cameras, tank controls, and large-scale set pieces for a more intimate, first-person experience that translated perfectly into the VR format.

This past September at the 2019 Tokyo Game Show, Capcom revealed another upcoming Resident Evil title, Project Resistance. Arriving on PC and consoles mid-to-late 2020, this asymmetrical online survival horror game will offer a new take on the original RE formula with an escape room-style experience in which a team of 4 players must work together to survive an onslaught of enemies controlled by another player serving as “The Mastermind.”
