Pistol Whip’s Latest Free Update Has You Fighting Aboard A Dieselpunk Airship

Pistol Whip’s Dark Skies update paves the way for the future of the franchise.

Ask anyone to name their favorite VR games of 2019 and there’s a good chance you’ll find Pistol Whip on that list. Since it’s release developer Cloudhead Games has released a handful of free monthly updates to the action movie simulator, adding new scenes, weaponry, and tracks.

Today’s Dark Skies update transports you ton alternate 194X history where you’ll battle your way across dieselpunk airship directly inspired Team Ninja’s Ninja Gaiden. action-packed scene features a futuristic noir style reminiscent 1980’s Flash Gordon. Which by the way, is an awesome movie.

Each portion of Dark Skies is soaked with intense VR action as you go head-to-head with dozens of fractal enemies to the beat of a thumping electronic track. This intense multicolored gauntlet will have your heart racing as you dodge bullets flying in from every direction. If you run out of bullets, don’t worry, you can pistol whip the enemy in the face and body and watch them explode upon contact.

Seeing as Dark Skies takes place in a different timeline and universe, you also get 3 new wartime pistols as part of the “Antiques Collection., including one particularly bad-ass luger pistol.

Talking with Pistol Whip fans during a Rec Room hangout about what they would like to see with an update, one fan told VRScout “Pistol Whip is the raddest game ever. I love playing it. It’s way better than Beat Saber. I’d welcome any update as long as the game still has the same energy.” While another fan said, “F*ck yes! I’ll play any version of Pistol Whip!”

This update is actually the start of something much bigger for Pistol Whip and its fans. Moving forward, Cloudhead Games will no long continue its monthly release format. The company is instead working on a much larger update planned for later in the year that will include new scenes, new modifiers, and new ways to play.

Pistol Whip Dark Skies is available now as part of a free update for the Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift/Rift S, SteamVR, and Viveport.
