This is one way Oculus is going to get the virtual reality headset preorders rolling in. CCP’s multiplayer dogfighting shooter game EVE: Valkyrie will ship with all preorders of the Oculus Rift.
Although we still don’t know when the Oculus Rift will be available for preorders, let alone a ship date, we do know that the Rift will be released sometime in Q1 2016. And according to a statement today, EVE: Valkyrie will be “premiering on the Oculus platform,” implying a windowed exclusivity for the launch of the title. Playstation VR is set to also have the game on the platform, with the Playstation VR headset scheduled to ship sometime in the first half of 2016.
EVE: Valkyrie’s game developer CCP is known for their Eve:Online space MMO title, but has most recently been diving head-first into virtual reality as their next big bet on the future of gaming.
EVE: Valkyrie has both player-versus-player matches as well as a variety of team modes. Since the Oculus Rift will be launching with an XBOX controller, you can expect to have some familiar gameplay mechanics when you are shooting it out with other players or flying guard in capture-the-flag.
“Eve: Valkyrie is one of the most anticipated virtual reality games, and one of the first true VR games to go into development,” Oculus founder Palmer Luckey said in a statement. “It perfectly captures the promise of immersive gaming, shooting you into a sci-fi adventure as you pilot a spaceship in search of combat. Battling your friends (and enemies) in multiplayer space dogfights is the ultimate VR thrill, and we’re excited to partner with CCP to bring this experience to Rift owners everywhere.”
Oh an by the way, Rán Kavik, leader of the Valkyrie pilots, is brought to life by the voice of actress Katee Sackhoff, who we know from Battlestar Galactica, Riddick, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Frak yeah.
