New Gear VR for Galaxy S6 Goes on Sale May 8th in US, Pre-Orders Tomorrow

Samsung announced today that the Gear VR Innovator Edition for S6, compatible with both the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, would be available for preorder tomorrow (April 24) and available for purchase on Friday, May 8 in the US.

The latest Samsung Gear VR for S6 broadens the reach of compatible mobile phones from the original Samsung Gear VR that only supported the Note 4.

In addition to online availability at and, the Gear VR S6 will be for sale at Best Buy retail locations starting Friday, May 15, with Gear VR demonstrations and availability expanding to hundreds more Best Buy stores throughout the summer.

“The continued expansion and availability of the Gear VR platform is a strong signal to VR developers and content creators about the viability of this new opportunity. Along with our great partners Oculus and Best Buy, we’re pushing this mobile VR revolution forward and are grateful to work with the amazingly open and passionate VR community,” said Nick DiCarlo, vice president and general manager of immersive products and virtual reality at Samsung Electronics America.

The Samsung Gear VR S6 edition comes with a few improvements to comfort for the headset, including a reduction in size, redesigned straps, improved airflow and a built-in fan for better ventilation. It appears that Samsung has also done away with the faceplate of the original Gear VR, a plastic cover that snapped onto the front of the unit after inserting the phone. The aesthetic only original faceplate is now being replaced by a more functional faceplate to protect the lenses from dust or scratching, by sealing the outer facing lenses when a phone is not inserted into the headset.

We are looking forward to the latest headset improvements and whether the improved Quad HD Super AMOLED displays of the new Galaxy S6 and S6 edge phones will improve the visual experience and fidelty of the Samsung Gear VR.
