Virtual reality experiences have become Hollywood’s hype-machine dream tool. A three- to four-minute VR experience puts moviegoers directly into the movie as a character or in the thick of action—all from the comfort of their own homes. Recent campaigns to generate buzz include The Conjuring 2, The Forest, and Star Wars: Rogue One.
The most recent film to get the VR treatment is Lionsgate’s upcoming Power Rangers movie.
Remember the Power Rangers? The multicultural team of butt-kicking fighting machines? Once upon a time (the 90s), it was all cheese—goofy special effects and over-the-top baddies. I ate a lot of cereal while watching that show. The two are just a match made in heaven…but I digress. Qualcomm teamed up with Lionsgate to produce the Power Rangers VR experience, which debuts in mere weeks at CES in Las Vegas. Longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise will have the chance to become whichever Power Ranger they want to be.
My first choice’ll be the Black Ranger. That suit is just too cool to resist.
The Powers Rangers movie comes out in March of 2017, so that gives us plenty of time to get our hands on this new experience and test it out as each of the different rangers. In the meantime, let’s sit down with a bowl of cereal and take a moment to relive our childhoods.
