How Virtual Fish Are Being Used To Stress Test The Quest 2

Over 5,000 sea creatures can be found in the ‘Augmented Dream.’

Japanese VR developer MyDearest (Tokyo Chronos, Altdeus: Beyond Chronos) is set to launch the first episode of its latest game, Dyschronia: Chronos Alternate, later this summer. In this next-gen visual novel, players are immersed in a murder mystery adventure set throughout the futuristic marine world city Astrum Close.

As part of the game, players will have access to an augmented aquarium built by the city’s artificial intelligence (AI) to help relax its citizens. Here players can explore for additional clues that may help with the investigation or sit back and enjoy a 360 panorama view of various virtual marine life.

What’s most interesting, however, is how MyDearest used this virtual Sea World to stress test Meta’s Quest 2 hardware. The goal, according to the company, was to see how many “moving elements” the headset could run simultaneously while maintaining a “stable environment.”

“What started as a cute school of fish flying around increased to one thousand sea creatures,” said MyDearest in an official release. “This number was increased until there were more than 5,000 creatures in the Augmented Dream. The final element added was a whale, one of the largest creatures in the world…”

According to the company, Dyschronia: Chronos Alternate Episode I features the most virtual fish in a VR game at one time.
