Fight Hordes of Zombies In Upcoming Walking Dead AR Experience

The Walking Dead: Our World brings the zombie series to life with a Pokemon Go-style augmented reality experience.

When Niantic released Pokemon Go back in July of last year the world basically came to a standstill as millions of smartphone owners uprooted their daily lives to capture digital renditions of fictional cartoon animals scattered around their local parks. It was an absolutely unprecedented response that will no doubt go down in the history books as not only one of the most successful smartphone applications ever released, but as the experience that finally introduced the intuitive technology that is augmented reality to the mainstream world.

Now it appears as though American basic cable channel AMC is looking to capitalize on the popularity of the mega-popular app with their own take on location-based augmented reality. This time doing away with cute Pokemon creatures in favor of flesh-hungry walkers. Developed by Finnish studio Next Games, the same group responsible for the mobile strategy game The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land, The Walking Dead: Our World is an upcoming AR experience that tasks players with fending off hordes of blood-thirsty zombies using any weapon they can come across.

The trailer, which has clearly been over-dramatized and more-than-likely does not reflect the final product, shows players in various locations fending off groups of walkers by picking up sub machine guns, grenades, what looks like Michonne’s katana and other weapons scattered around the world. It also appears as though digital versions of the shows most popular characters, such as Daryl Dixon and Rick Grimes, will assist players throughout portions of the game alongside your friends in the real-world.

“The fans love how the show encourages you to ask, ‘What would I do in a zombie apocalypse?’, and in this game we aim to let players explore this hypothetical in a way they’ve never experienced before,” said Next CEO Teemu Huuhtanen in a statement. “AR enables players to live through the fight for survival in a whole new way in their familiar surroundings.”

No word yet on an official release date, but it’s likely we could be slicing down AR zombies near the shows return October 22nd. With just an obviously over-stylized trailer to go on, it’s tough to say what the actual experience will entail. I guess we’ll just have to wait for some official game play footage before we find out if The Walking Dead: Our World is a well-fleshed AR experience, or just a poorly executed clone of Pokemon Go…
