Take on the role of a thieving squirrel in this cross-platform multiplayer experience.
Resolution Games (Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs, Bait!, Narrows) has revealed a brand new VR multiplayer couch party game that uses smartphone devices to offer a unique, asymmetrical gameplay experience that’s as intuitive as it is silly.
Available this summer on major VR platforms, iOS, and Android, ACRON: Attack of the Squirrels! promises an engaging social VR experience in which anyone in possession of a smartphone device can participate in the action.
According to an official press release, “The seeds of life are under attack! It’s up to you and your friends to protect them or steal them – depending if you take on the role of an extraordinarily protective tree or as one of several crafty yet thieving squirrels – in the new cross-platform party game from Resolution Games.”
Here’s how it works: one player straps into a VR headset and steps into the role of a humanoid tree tasked with maintaining guard over the “seeds of life” (Golden Acorns). Meanwhile, two to seven players use their smartphone devices to control one of four unique rebel squirrels in an attempt to snatch as many Golden Acorns as they can and return them to their base of operations.
That’ll be easier said than done, however, as the player in VR will be using his abilities as the guardian tree to stop you at every turn. Tree players can hurl a variety of projectiles at their furry foes, such as chunks of wood, large boulders, and sap; they can even grab enemy players who venture a little too close King Kong-style. Thankfully, each class of rebel squirrel comes equipped with a unique ability to assist them on the battlefield.
Combined with the convenience and portability of the Oculus Quest, ACRON has the chance to be a standout hit among standalone users. The ability to quickly and effortlessly jump into an engaging social experience in which anyone with a smartphone device can participate could be a game-changer for local VR multiplayer.
ACRON: Attack of the Squirrels will launch initially on the Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive this Summer. No word yet on an official price.
